Be the Best Partner for Yourself

Learning how to create a life of love, acceptance and meaningful relationship with self and others using the ancient wisdom and spirituality of Feng Shui. - by Michele McTeague

"Know thyself." -Socrates

"He who knows others is wise; he who knows himself is enlightened." - Lao Tzu

What does it mean to know yourself? I'm not talking about your favorite color, food, or band. Nor your favorite vacation spot or even you're your preferences in your ideal partner.

I'm referring to the INNER you. The REAL and ever present you. And possibly, the YOU that you have ignored because you know, life is going to life. We all get caught up in what we think we should do, how we should act and what is expected of us. However, if we can manage to align our emotions, mind and spirit, we stand a damn good chance at finding our clarity, purpose and peace. And in case you didn't know, when you do find this balance, every relationship in your life is enhanced and clarified.

Here's the great juxtaposition of humanity:

We long for meaningful connections with other people yet we don't have meaningful connection with ourselves. The truth is, we can't properly receive unconditional love from another person when we don't have any experience of it within and towards ourselves.

The good news is we can improve our relationships with everyone including ourselves using the time honored practices of Feng Shui! Below is a brief description of the Relationship area, where it is located in your home and the qualities it possess.

In Western Feng Shui, the Relationship area is located at the back right corner of your home. You can also boost the back right corner of each room of your home to compound the relationship energy and to serve as a reminder in each room of your intention to get to know yourself.

It is associated with the southwest direction and is yin in energetic nature

The element is Earth. Mother Earth to be exact. Think rich fertile land that gladly receives the seed that is planted. Earth's supporting element is fire.

This transformational energy relates to our inner drive and enlightenment.

The colors of the relationship area are soft blush, pink and earth tones.

Below are a few Feng Shui remedies that you can easily install in the relationship area of your home. Place your remedies with the intention so they remind you to build the relationship with yourself. With the image of Mother Earth in mind, create an environment to receive and grow. Just as seeds of different plants require different amounts of sun, water and minerals to thrive, so will you need a certain elements to create that warm and enveloping atmosphere of Mother Earth. These remedies are just suggestions. Feel free to get creative and use items that speak to you!

  • Incorporate soft earth tones into the décor. Consider soft rose or blush tones on the walls, artwork or bed-ding. Make this area feel as calm, nurturing and supportive as needed. Like any budding relationship, the more comfortable you are, the easier it is to open up and get to know the other person.

  • If you're into crystals consider add Rhodocrosite. This red/pink crystal promotes self-love, emotional healing, compassion and creativity.

  • Pottery and ceramics are excellent additions as their materials come from the earth and fire solidifies them.

This reminds us that we too are formed from the elements of the earth and our experience here on Earth forges our character and growth.

  • Add soft lighting with a Himalayan sea salt lamp. The salt used in these lamps is mined from mountains (A reminder of the work we're doing in the self-knowledge area.) representing the healing earth element and the light in them represents fire. Just adding this one remedy brings in both the main element and it's supporting element for the relationship area.

  • Declutter the space. Keep the Chi flowing freely and you focused on introspection. Nothing will grow in stagnant energy.

  • Write yourself a letter or keep a journal. Tell yourself something really cool about yourself everyday. Ask yourself what you need to hear. Then listen honestly. You'd be surprised what you can learn about yourself!

  • Woo yourself! Incorporate items that you love such as our favorite blanket, book, reading chair or piece of art. Make yourself feel at home in this space.

The path of "knowing thyself" can be a little scary and arduous at first. You may discover things about yourself you never knew...or knew at one time and forgot. If you can keep an open mind and skip the judgment, you'll find a whole new appreciation for yourself. You'll understand who you are intrinsically, maybe even enjoy your own company, AND be your own best support system. A really nice side effect from building your relationship with yourself is experiencing the improvement in every relationship in your life. Some get string. er and some disintegrate. Either way, what's best for you emerges when you embrace and respect yourself.
