Enhance Your Outdoor Space with Feng Shui

Feng Shui is based on the five elements: wood, water, earth, fire, and metal. These elements originate from nature, making the great outdoors the ideal setting to harness their power. What better place to work with these elements than in their natural environment? It's the perfect way to support your intentions and use your creativity at the same time!

Water- If you live water front, this element is covered but if you're like the vast majority of us, you'll have to create your own water feature. This can be as elaborate as a pond or as simple as a bird bath or table top fountain. Just be sure to keep any water in your garden sparkly clean! You can skip the water feature and add dark blues and blacks or even brighter blues to usher in the water. There are many plants with dark foliage and flowers and let's not forget the option of using dark colors and blues in your furniture, cushions and planters

Meandering and curvy walk ways and borders are another great way to tie in the water element.

Wood- the obvious application here is trees. Evergreens are great for the colder climates. And bushes such as roses, spirea and viburnum also fit the bill here. In Feng Shui, the color green symbolizes wood and can be included in your garden through plants, furniture, cushions, sculptures and more. Tall columnar shapes also reference wood so bring out those tiki torches!

Fire- The sun is the main source of fire element in your garden but you can accentuate this element so that even on those cloudy days, fire is still balanced in your garden.

Add red plants such as Geranium, Rose and Kniphofia and plants with triangular leaves like Coleus and Hostas. String lights, tiki torches, candles and solar stake lights bring fire into the night as well.

Earth- This element is about more than soil. Get creative with this element. Rocks-both large and small, ceramic or clay pots and earth toned colors are eye pleasing ways to bring in more of the earth element. Anything that is square shaped or a solid low seating area will also boost the earth element.

Metal- So many options here! Think metal windchimes, sculptures or garden statues, pots, gazing balls and birdhouses/feeders. Plants with white flowers and round/sphere shapes will also bring in the metal element.

Whether you have a small patio or a large plot of land, Feng Shui can help you create an oasis for relaxation, connection and reflection. The only limit is your imagination!
